How To Shave The Back Of Your Head (3 Helpful Tips)
As a guy, there are a lot of different things to keep in mind when it comes to making sure you’re properly groomed throughout all areas of your body. Shaving your face, trimming your hair, and using a nice cologne or body spray are all rather common things, but what about cleaning up the back of your head/neck? This is a task that a lot of men should be doing regularly, but figuring out how to shave the back of your head can pose a real problem at times.
Just like with shaving your back or another part of your body that you can’t see directly in front of you, trimming or shaving hair behind your head and/or neck isn’t the easiest thing in the world. Just so you know, you not alone taking to the Internet to figure out how to trim the back of your own neck, and we’re here today to hopefully end this debacle once and for all.
We’ve put together a small list of 3 tips to help make cleaning up the back of your head and neck as easy as possible, and without any further delay, here’s what we found.
Use an electric trimmer or shaver
If you came to this guide hoping to find an answer to how to shave the back of your neck with clippers, you might be disappointed. While taking a pair of clippers/scissors to the back of your neck to clean up any hair back there might seem like the easiest way to go about things, it simply won’t provide you with the results that you’re after.
When it comes to shaving any hair on your head, we strongly recommend that you purchase an electric shaver or trimmer of some sort in order to perform such duties. We have plenty of guides here on Stubble Patrol to make the buying process a bit easier if you don’t already own such a tool, and something along these lines really is necessary when it comes to making the back of your head as clean as possible.
Clippers are fine when working with longer bits of hair, but an electric shaver will be able to cut your hair much closer to your skin than any pair of clippers will. Not only that, but electric shavers are considerably easier to use when working with this part of your head/neck.
You can certainly go out and spend a couple hundred dollars on a top-of-the-line hair trimmer, but if you don’t have that much cash to burn through, you can still pick up something that will be just as functional for around $20 or so.
Having to pick up yet another grooming tool might not sound all that appealing if you don’t already own an electric shaver, but trust us when we say that you’ll never want to go back to regular clippers for cleaning up the back of your neck once you try out something that’s motorized.
Trimming your neck with a mirror
Whenever you’re working with parts of your body that aren’t directly within your line of sight, it’s always a good idea to use a mirror whenever possible. This might seem like a rather simple and common tip, but it’s one that many guys often overlook.
As for the type of mirror that you should use, this is really up to you and what’s readily available. At the very least, we recommend standing in front of a mirror in your bathroom so you can move around and get a visual on the back of your head from different angles.
Along with this, it also doesn’t hurt if you can use this larger mirror in tandem with a handheld one as well. This will require you to be a bit more careful with your shaving since you’ll only have one hand to do so, but it will provide you with a much better view on the area of your head or neck that you’re trimming.
Better yet, if you’re willing to spend a bit of cash, invest some money into a swing arm mirror that you can attach to your bathroom wall. This will free up both of your hands to do your shaving, and you can reposition the extra mirror so you can still get that additional view of the hair that you’re currently trying to shave. This is the most ideal setup if you’re wondering how to buzz the back of your head, trim up stray hairs, or pretty much anything else.
What to do if you don’t have a mirror
Having multiple or even just one mirror is ideal when trimming the back of your neck, but what if you ever find yourself in a situation where you simply don’t have access to one? Who knows when such a situation would arise, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Assuming that you still have access to an electric shaver or trimmer, the only other thing you’ll need is a baseball cap. A cap with a curved bill will be the most ideal here, and we recommend using one that’s seen a few days of wear rather than a collectors hat that you plan on keeping for years and years without getting so much as a speck of dirt on it.
Anyways, once you’ve got your shaver and cap, put it on your head backwards so that the bill is laying down across your neck. With the bill here, you’ll use it as a sort of straight edge or stencil to trim your hair.
Turn on your trimmer, start shaving, and you’ll be done in no time at all!
This may not be the most ideal or precise way to clean up the back of your head or neck, but it certainly does work in a pinch if you’re without a mirror and still need to get yourself looking as good as possible.
